MEtaphor be with You Assignment & Rubric
Short Fiction Unit – ELA 9
Metaphor Be With You: Character Assignment
Step 1:
Choose a character from one of the stories you have read so far. Create a conceptual (visual and written) metaphor for one of these characters.
Step 2:
Come up with a series of key words to describe your chosen character. Use the “Adjectives for Character Sketches” handout as a guide.
Ex) The protagonist from “The Tell-tale Heart” is guilty, obsessive, insane; he is imprisoned by guilt and obsession.
Step 3:
Equate the word(s) to an everyday thing (object, machine, animal, activity, event, an element of nature, another person). Take note of the word list in the preceding sentence: each word is also a NOUN.
Ex) Guilt or obsession traps or jails your mind; therefore the narrator’s guilt/obsession is his jail cell.
The narrator is a jail cell.
The above sentence is part of the conceptual metaphor.
Make sure to write the sentence down, as it makes an excellent starting point for your assignment.
Step 4:
Locate a “visual” image for your “conceptual” metaphor. You may use one image or a combination of images. Colour can also be utilized to emphasize the metaphor, especially since certain colours are symbolic. ie. Black = death; White = purity
The images may be “found” or drawn, or they may be layered and arranged like a collage. Computer software may also be used to find and / or create the visual part of the metaphor. The possibilities are endless – just use your imagination. Cite all images.
Step 5:
Explain your chosen metaphor. Write a concise yet well thought out paragraph explaining your choices and how they represent your character’s personality / true nature.
FYI:
Use your metaphor notes and student exemplars ('Student Share' Drive) to guide you through this assignment. Consider the rubric that accompanies this assignment so you know how your work will be evaluated.
May the "Metaphor Be With You"!
I can’t wait to see the finished product!
